Castle Shannon’s name traces back to David Strawbridge’s farm, which he called Castle Shanahan after a townland in Ireland. The Pittsburgh and Castle Shannon Railroad arrived in 1872, and new homes went up quickly after the railroad offered free transportation and lumber to anyone who built. By 1904 eight coal mines were operating, and the borough was incorporated in 1919.
